Rocking Roman Baths

December 12th, 2021

Most Romans didn't have baths at home, so had to go to the public baths. In the public baths, the water was naturally hot because it came from deep underground. The baths also had under-floor heating that made it extra warm. There were gaps under the floor of the baths with warm air flowing and that's how the under-floor heating works.

There were three different types of baths. They were hot, cold and warm. The hot one was called "caldarium", the cold one was called "frigidarium" and the warm one was called "tepidarium".

When they went to the public baths, they always worshipped Minerva who is a god of water.

Did you know?

People used to write on lead and throw it in the water. On the tablets it would say messages to the gods about their enemies. It would be messages about what the gods should do to their enemies for things they had done. Sometimes it was because their clothes had been stolen from the changing room.
